Tonight, while I’m falling asleep in my warm bed, in my safe home, I can’t stop thinking about the thousands of refugees I saw, and the many I had the privilege to meet, in Iraq. I can’t stop seeing their faces or the make-shift tents in the desert that are now their homes. I can’t stop playing the stories after stories they told me in my head. The stories about losing everything to terrorist groups; their parents, children, husbands, and homes. The stories of fleeing for their lives. My heart breaks and breaks as I think about them trying to fall asleep, fearful, heart-broken, and many suffering PTSD from the traumas after traumas they suffered. It’s unfathomable to imagine the pain of losing everything, and it’s even more unimaginable to try to understand that there are 22 million refugees in our world today. I pray that my heart and the heart of the Church will open more and more to the broken who so greatly need it. The people who God loves so, so much. I pray that we can love them with Christ’s love and open our hands and hearts to them, as Jesus would. I pray that we remember that our own Savior was once refugee, forced to flee his home, and treat the families who are seeking refuge as we would treat Jesus’s.

“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:35-40‬ ‭NLT‬‬
